Church Recycling - Who we are

We are a small church group, based in a the ex-mining village of Grimethorpe, near Barnsley in South Yorkshire.

We decided to get together in an effort to see the Church in the forefront of the campaign to recycle.

There are a number of recycling schemes within our communities and towns (from local authorities to supermarkets, and from major charities to local charity shops). Many churches also participate in any number of schemes (mobile phones, ink cartridges, postage stamps). But we felt there was nothing readily available to allow churches to recycle their own items (particularly with regards to un-used or un-wanted garments, fabrics and textiles).

A number of the group have experience in sewing: from basic finishing and repair work, to more advanced work, like embroidery. Some have even made new Church Vestment sets for local parishes.

But instead of making new, we wanted to concentrate on repairing and recycling existing.

One of our aims is to create opportunities for local people - the experienced volunteer passing on their skills and abilities to the new volunteer. This way, the special skills needed will be preserved.

Our efforts have recently been mentioned on 14 May 2010 in the Church Times:   click here
